Autism and Pervasive Developmental Difficulties

Pervasive developmental disorders are neurodevelopmental disorders that seriously affect an individual's social development and communication skills. Childhood autism is the best-known disorder on the spectrum. Recognition and clinical presentation often occur between the ages of 2 and 4. Common symptoms are delay/absence of speech, inability to use body language and facial expressions, limitation of eye contact, failure to respond when their name is called, inability to communicate with peers, and lack of age-appropriate scripted play and imitation skills.

If children show these symptoms, they should undergo hearing testing and medical/neurological evaluation. If an organic pathology does not explain the situation and a diagnosis of pervasive developmental disorder is made by child and adolescent psychiatrists, the child should be referred to special education without delay. Diagnosis is made by clinical interview and observation. If aggressive behavior is observed, sedative drug treatments are used.
