Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

The concept of PTSD began to attract social attention with the observation of the great difficulties experienced by war veterans. However, it has been observed that it can also be seen after various events such as accidents, natural disasters, fire, robbery, rape, torture, etc., which can cause severe stress for the person. Many people may experience problems after a traumatic process; While some people overcome these problems, others are affected by the traumatic event for a long time.

The emergence of stress reactions after a traumatic event is defined as normal reactions to an abnormal situation. However, if these reactions become persistent and disrupt the person's functionality, a disease occurs. The person frequently recalls memories of the traumatic event in disturbing ways. He feels intense psychological distress when faced with reminders of the event. Avoids talking about the trauma, going to places associated with the trauma, and avoiding stimuli that remind of the trauma.

Interest in activities and/or human relationships that were previously considered important has decreased. Describes the feeling of alienation. He has lost his sense of the future. For these reasons, he is in a state of increased arousal; He/she experiences sleeping problems, irritability, difficulty in anger management, and extreme startle reactions.

Different approaches can be used depending on the person's subjective psychological needs. It is important to inform the person about the process and course of treatment. Most of the time, drug treatment and psychotherapy are carried out together. Antidepressant medications are useful in relieving many disease symptoms, especially when accompanied by depression. Among psychotherapeutic treatments, cognitive-behavioral therapies stand out as the type of treatment that has been shown to be effective. Again, the EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) approach has come to the fore. Additionally, anxiety coping techniques such as relaxation are helpful.
